The main change since Issue #6 is rain in the east. Our 15-day forecast now shows a strong wet spell over the eastern and southeastern mountains. Kunar rises from 20 mm in the last issue to 47 mm, Nangarhar from 12 mm to 47 mm, and Khost reaches 54 mm with one point at 107 mm. In steep, narrow valleys this is enough for flash floods and landslides, so the east is the first place to act this issue. Rain also reaches the Kabul basin, where Kabul, Logar and Kapisa can expect 24 to 33 mm. The rest of the country stays dry and hot. Peak temperatures reach 39 to 44°C in the southwest and the northern lowlands, with Nimroz, Hilmand and Jawzjan the hottest, and dust has eased but still hazes six provinces in the south and centre. Ground cover measured in June is bare or very sparse across most of the country. The drought story has not changed since Issue #6. It remains a crop and water stress problem, not a rainfall gap.
